Professionalism Workshop

The CIA's Professionalism Workshop is a one day workshop that provides an overview of professionalism issues and makes extensive use of the case study method. Topics covered include the
following:
  • What is a professional?
  • The CIA structure
  • The CIA's views on professionalism
  • The CIA's discipline process
  • Malpractice and legal liability.
Why Attend?
  • To learn the importance of professionalism for a career as an actuary;
  • To earn credit towards the ACIA and ASA designations.
Workshop schedule
8 a.m. – 9 a.m. Registration and Buffet Breakfast
9 a.m. – Noon Workshop
Noon – 1 p.m. Buffet Lunch
1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Workshop
In preparation for the upcoming Professionalism Workshop, certain pre-reading of materials is required.  You will not be tested on the materials, but knowledge of them will better prepare you for the workshop and the discussions that will take place: 
  1. Rules of Professional Conduct
  2. General Standards of Practice
  3. Qualification Standard – Continuing Professional Development
  4. Policy on Monitoring Compliance – CPD
  5. Disciplinary Process
  6. Policy on the use of Membership Titles and Designations
This workshop is a requirement to become an Associate of the CIA (ACIA) and for Property & Casualty candidates applying for membership in the CIA unless they have attended the CAS Professionalism Course offered in Canada. When the CAS Professionalism Course is offered in Canada and when it includes appropriate Canadian content provided by the CIA, it will be deemed equivalent to the CIA Professionalism Workshop for the purposes of satisfying the CIA eligibility requirements.
The Society of Actuaries' (SOA) Board of Directors has approved the workshop as an equivalent to its Associateship Professionalism Course (APC) for Canadian students. Therefore, Canadian candidates who are pursuing Associateship in the SOA (ASA designation), can obtain credit for the APC by attending the CIA's Professionalism Workshop.
